- Keeping a Steady Tempo -

One of the most important things to learn, especially in the beginning stages of learning to play the guitar, is keeping a steady tempo. Many teachers will advise students to tap their foot while practicing. Just begin by playing a 3 chord progression and tap your foot to a 4 count. For example: One, Two, Three, Four, One, Two, Three, Four etc.

You can also use a device called a metronome that will help you to keep a steady tempo while you rehearse. Using a metronome is probably the best method for learning how to keep a steady tempo. What is a metronome? Metronomes are just like a clock and operate in a "Tic - Tock" sort of fashion. They can be set at any tempo or speed which is ideal for your practice sessions. Regular use of a metronome will help you to build up a steady, fast, and accurate playing technique .

Metronomes that are manufactured today come in a vast array of styles and sport numerous features. Some are digital and emit a beeping sound or may have LED's that blink at the set tempo. I personally prefer the mechanical metronomes that are hand wound and use an inversed pendulum with an adjustable slide meter . You can see the meter as it swings and they are more audible than some of the digital models I have encountered. The best thing to do is to go into a music store, see what's available, and ask the salesperson if you could try it before you buy it. Make sure you can hear the clicking as you play and also understand the options that are available on the unit.

When practicing scales, chords, or while playing a tune, try to use a metronome to keep your tempo steady. Sticking to this kind of routine will help you develop a  good sense of rhythm. Once you have this skill mastered, you will be an indispensable part of any band or group.
