Basics: Anatomy

This is a picture of an electric Gibson Les Paul 1957 Goldtop. The basic elements of the guitar are the same with the exception of cosmetics, pickup configurations, electronics and so forth. Most electrics will have pickups, volume and tone controls, and a pickup selector. Some electrics will have a whammy bar at the bridge.

This is a picture of a 35th Anniversary Ovation acoustic guitar. This version has a cutaway near the lower part of the soundhole on the body of the guitar. This makes playing on the upper frets more comfortable and allot easier. Some acoustics even come with on board electronics so that they may be amplified without the use of a microphone and PA system. Designs and features will vary on different models and makes but the basic elements are the same. Most acoustics use steel strings and the classical models will usually be strung with nylon strings. Classical models will also have a significant amount of space between each string and the fretboards will be noticeably wider.
